BOOK JOURNEY:

Her Fearless Run was sparked to life, very appropriately, on Marathon Monday in 2016. I was working on a revision while watching/listening to coverage of the Boston Marathon. Kathrine Switzer had joined the broadcast team as an analyst that year. At one point, she recalled her historic run of the famous race back in 1967 and the moment when one of the race officials tried to rip her race numbers from her shirt and shove her off the course. It was a story that I was not familiar with but, as a runner myself, I was immediately captivated by it. I thought about all of the races that I had signed up for and run in the past. Never once did I wonder or worry if I would be refused because I was a woman.

After a quick search to see if there was already a picture book biography on Kathrine, I was pleased to see that there wasn’t. I knew I needed to write that story. Months and several rejections later, I found Kristen Nobles and Page Street Kids. Kristen felt the same way about Kathrine and her story as I did and I knew I had found the perfect place for my manuscript. Charlotte Wenger joined the PSK team as associate editor shortly after and was essential in making the story shine! And when I thought I couldn’t get any luckier, Ellen Rooney agreed to illustrate!

KIM’S BIO:

Kim Chaffee, a life-long New Englander and debut author, is a former second-grade teacher now focusing on writing and being a mom. She holds a BA in history anda master’s in education. In addition to blogging about picture books for parents, teachers, and writers, she runs as well as organizes a local annual race. She lives with her family in New Hampshire.

ELLEN’S BIO:

Ellen Rooney grew up watching the Boston Marathon and now spends her time as an illustrator and designer. She has her BFA from the University of Victoria. Apainter, printmaker, collage artist, and debut picture book illustrator, she now resides in British Columbia, Canada, with her husband.
