Pip Pip Toodle Doo follows Pinky the bird as she sings her playful song, dives through the clouds, and meets new friends Fred, Sue, Jean, and Ray! These birds aren’t like Pinky, but as she’ll find out, that only makes them more fun and more interesting. Lisa Sobiek’s buoyant story, accompanied by Paula L. Robison’s colorful illustrations, demonstrates the fun of being actively interested in others and how asking questions leads to new understandings and new friends!

PIP PIP TOODLE DOO by debut author and retired nurse Lisa Sobiek is also my debut as a picture book illustrator. PIP PIP’s publisher, Baobab Press, and I had worked together on other projects, and when they asked if I’d be interested in illustrating a picture book, I was especially excited because it had been a dream since my college days to illustrate children’s literature.

After reading Lisa’s manuscript I was thrilled to realize I’d be a good fit! Lisa crafted a sweet message into an enjoyable read-aloud for young children that also manages to engage them by asking how they’d handle certain situations. Her story really appealed to me personally because of my and my children’s struggles with what I call “borderline Asperger’s syndrome,” a type of Autism which causes difficulties in reading emotions and can make social encounters and friendships tricky to navigate. Also, as a bird- and nature-lover PIP PIP’s diverse cast of bird characters in a natural setting appealed to me from the start.

When Baobab approved my initial concept art, they also suggested adding a layer of secondary characters, like a subtext for kids to discover as they read the story. Lisa and I were both on board with the idea and that’s how the other creatures came to live alongside Pinky and the other birds. In creating these new characters, it was a delight for me to discover that one of them turns into Pinky’s companion as she dives through the clouds calling “PIP PIP TOODLE DOO!” and meets new friends.

PIP PIP TOODLE DOO has already received positive feedback through reviews left by happy customers which has our team of creators feeling happy in return. When a school librarian reviewed PIP PIP saying, “we need more books like this” and calling it “gorgeous” it was one of the proudest moments of my life.

Paula L. Robison is a children’s book illustrator and author living in Reno, Nevada. Professionally, she’s worked in the field of advertising, as an art teacher, and even as a baker (because she loves cookies!). She grew up on the Flathead Reservation in Montana where undiagnosed dyslexia caused reading struggles in childhood. These issues were fortunately resolved in middle school where a new-found love of reading was established. She and her partner shared this love by reading to their three children. Paula also enjoyed reading stories for little ears and leading art projects for little hands for several years at her favorite bookstore’s Story Time (where, during college she worked in the children’s book section).

Paula has published interior illustrations and book covers in both Children’s and Adult genres, is a member of SCBWI, Storyteller Academy, and two author/illustrator critique groups. She is the illustrator of the picture book PIP PIP TOODLE DOO by author Lisa Sobiek (fall 2021, Baobab Press). Paula is currently working on a children’s book manuscript and illustrations for the story of a tiny endangered fish.

Montana-born Paula L. Robison moved to Reno, Nevada for a career in advertising where, later, she and her spouse raised three kids. Immediately coinciding with her children’s adulthood (and with fewer demands for cookie-baking) Paula put her experience as a graphic artist toward launching her long-held dream of illustrating and writing children’s is her first picture book illustrations were published September 2021 in the delightfully colorful PIP PIP TOODLE DOO.
