BOOK DESCRIPTION:

Sharing Good Food and God’s Love

For more than 2,000 years, people have started their day with a delicious meal in their bellies and the love of Jesus in their hearts. From bacon and eggs in the heart of North America to fresh baked bread in Antarctica, believers from each continent gather in the morning to share good food and conversation, giving thanks to God for all the wonderful things He’s done.

Inspired by the events found in John 21 where Jesus feeds his disciples, MyBreakfast with Jesus celebrates breakfast traditions from around the world. Your child will see people from all ethnicities following Jesus’s model of service: loving others by meeting their physical and spiritual needs.

This lovingly written and beautifully illustrated book will help your child make the connection between faith, food, and fellowship.

BOOK JOURNEY:

My Breakfast with Jesus started out as an idea in an email from my agent in July 2017. She suggested I write a picture book inspired by Jesus cooking a fish breakfast based on the Bible passage in John 21. This could be a book celebrating food, friendship, and hospitality as well as people in different countries eating together. I loved this idea because I had written in my idea notebook the same Bible passage. I had read those verses and thought that would make a neat story for a Christian magazine. However, I never wrote it.

I researched meals around the world and wrote my first draft in September 2017. This first draft was much different from the draft that sold as I tried to show meals happening at the same time around the world. It was quite difficult to get them lined up time-wise. After seven drafts, my critique group suggested I focus on breakfast. Aha! Three drafts later, January 2018, my agent started submitting. By February we had some interested editors! Harvest House, a Christian publisher, wanted to know my speaking platform. I worried. As a kindergarten teacher, my platform was five and six year olds! Thankfully, that didn’t hold them back. After a phone call with the editor the end of February, Harvest House made an offer at the beginning of March. I signed the contract March 22, 2018. The editor said, “Exposing children to different cultures and experiences is really valuable.”

Guy Wolek was chosen as illustrator, and when I saw his colorful spreads in September 2019, I was thrilled. I, especially, liked the penguin. (I wrote about breakfast in Antarctica.)

I hope this book inspires children and adults alike to reach out to others, invite them to breakfast, and share Jesus’ love with them. Sharing is caring!
