This wise old owl was created by Dow Phumiruk*. She is a pediatrician who has found her passion in children’s book art. Though creative throughout childhood, she put this artistic part of her aside as she pursued a career in medicine. Years later, when she chose to take time off to be a stay-at-home mother (2003), she rediscovered her love of all things creative, finding much joy especially in children’s book illustration. She experimented with different mediums and styles on her own for a while. Finally realizing she couldn’t do it all alone, she took the plunge into SCBWI in 2011 and hasn’t looked back! She was featured on Illustrator Saturday.

INDUSTRY CHANGES:

Luana Horry has been promoted to editor at HarperCollins Children’s.

Jennifer Udden joins New Leaf Literary & Media as literary agent; she was previously agent at Barry Goldblatt Literary.

Monica Odom has founded Odom Media Management, a literary agency focused on “voices and stories that have been historically hushed.” She will continue to represent nonfiction, literary fiction and illustrated titles for both children and adults, including her existing client list. She was at Liza Dawson Associates.

At Harper Children’s, announce that Luana Horry has been promoted to editor.

Jessica Sinsheimer has joined Context Literary Agency where she will represent YA, middle grade, upmarket genre fiction, and more. She was previously at the Sarah Jane Freymann Agency.

Jon Cobb and Ellen Goff have each been promoted to junior agent at HSG Agency.

Publisher for Simon & Schuster Children’s, Atheneum, Margaret K. McElderry Books, Salaam Reads, Caitlyn Dlouhy Books, and Denene Millner Books, Justin Chanda has been promoted to senior vice president. He has been at S&S for 14 years.

At Little, Brown Children’s, Esther Cajahuaringa has joined as assistant editor. She was formerly editorial assistant at Disney Hyperion.

Samantha Wekstein will join Thompson Literary Agency as agent for children’s books, young adult, and adult commercial fiction on October 7. She is currently an agent at Writers House.

Courtney Burke has been promoted to editor at Page Street Kids.

Connor Goldsmith has been promoted to senior agent at Fuse Literary.

Chelsea Eberly will join Greenhouse Literary Agency as agent on September 30. She is currently senior editor at Random House Children’s Books.

Maggie Lehrman has been promoted to editorial director, fiction for Abrams Children’s.
