BOOK DESCRIPTION:

In Clyde’s latest adventure, he lets his imagination run away with him!

Clyde is looking forward to seeing his friends again after a long break from school. Once they’re together, they all share exciting stories that sound much more fun than how Clyde spent his days. In order to fit in, Clyde claims that he went to space camp–and then outer space! But his friends are skeptical, and they want to see proof. Can Clyde come up with a way to convince them his lie is true, or will he have to come clean?

BOOK JOURNEY:

Clyde’s journey started when our youngest daughter repeatedly asked for a dog. Keith’s humor and inventiveness caused him to answer her request with an excuse.

His excuse was that we didn’t need a dog because we already had a pet hippo hiding in the backyard.

Of course, this simply wasn’t true, but the idea of a hippo who liked to hide spawned the idea of a picture book about a young hippo who was actually terrible at hiding.

I drew up an adorable hippo character that I soon fell in love with, and Clyde the Hippo was born.

We first wrote CLYDE LIKES TO HIDE and self-published it. We developed a second story, CLYDE LIKES TO SLIDE that showcased Clyde’s anxiousness about trying new things but never finished it past the dummy stage. Once Keith and I were agented, she encouraged us to complete the dummy and submit it as a single story, but we had hoped to develop it into a series of books. Once Penguin Workshop saw it, they asked that we submit it as a series, and we developed three other stories which they bought- CLYDE GOES TO SCHOOL, CLYDE LIED, and CLYDE LIKES TO RIDE.

KEITH’S BIO:

Keith Marantz loves writing for children. His ever-flowing inspiration comes from his own three. They serve as his idea-proving grounds and are also his toughest critics. Keith loves visual humor but, sadly, can’t draw his way out of a paper bag. Fortunately, his wife, Larissa, can. She is the other half of the Marantz duo that takes his ideas and turns them into amazing kid-lit art.  Keith is the author of an upcoming epic science fiction graphic novel entitled BLAKE LASER that will be illustrated by Larissa and published on HARPERCOLLINS in 2022. When he’s not taking care of his two pet ducks, Keith enjoys zooming around town in his 1979 Mazda RX-7.

Larissa & Keith live in Orange County, California. Larissa and Keith are both represented by Rachel Orr at Prospect Literary.

LARISSA’S BIO:

Illustrator, cartoonist and educator, Larissa Marantz creates visually appealing images and teaches students young and old how to do the same. She has taught art to elementary school students for more than 15 years and has been an adjunct faculty member of Laguna College of Art & Design for 12 years. Inspired by her family life, she began illustrating children’s books, and continued drawing Rugrats for Simon Spotlight Publishing. She is currently illustrating a graphic novel with husband Keith Marantz.

Larissa is recognized for her illustrations in several children’s books, including the Nickelodeon Rugrats series. Marantz began her professional career as an animation artist with Klasky Csupo Studios working as a Character Designer and continued her interests in animation while teaching at the Animation Academy in Burbank. She currently teaches Figure Drawing for Animators at Laguna College of Art + Design. She formed her own company, OC Art Studios, to bring art education to the many schools in the Orange County area and has taught hundreds of children over the last several years.

Larissa and Keith, thank you for sharing your books and their journey with us. I love how the whole thing started. These books should make children laugh when Clyde uses his imagination to embellish on what he did during his break from school. Good luck with the book.

Talk tomorrow,

Kathy
