CRAFT & BUSINESS OF ILLUSTRATING CHILDREN’S BOOKS (https://www.childrensbookacademy.com/2020-craft–business-of-illustrating-childrens-books.html

Registration just opened with some early bird discount and scholarship opportunities. One of the most amazing highlights of this course (and the testimonials bear this out) is its trio of teachers.  The 2020 Summer CBICB course is co-taught by former student and now successful illustrator, Larissa Marantz, and 2 acquiring Art Directors, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Senior Designer and Art Director Andrea Miller, and Clearfork/Spork Editor and Art Director, Dr. Mira Reisberg. All of them are also published illustrators with MANY years of experience in the field.

Joining CBA for the first time as a co-instructor, Illustrator Larissa Marantz (http://www.larissamarantz.com/) began working as a Character Designer for Nickelodeon’s Rocket Power and Rugrats TV shows. Her picture book illustration career started when she left the animation studio to stay at home with her young children. In between numerous play dates, and hundreds of diaper changes, she illustrated almost a dozen books for Nickelodeon’s licensed properties. After she took the Craft and Business of Illustrating Children’s Books course, she landed a fantastic agent and her career took off. During the 2019 course, Mira invited Larissa to join one of the Friday mentoring classes and she was so incredibly generous doing draw overs and giving students advice, Mira invited her to join the next class as a paid co-instructor. Larissa has taught art classes to thousands of children through her after-school enrichment program, OC Art Studios as well as digital painting classes at Laguna College of Art + Design. She jogs to fast beats, yoga stretches to slow beats and spends most of her days sipping coffee while creating illustrations for children’s book projects with her husband and creative partner, Keith Marantz.

Here are some of Larissa’s published works:

Andrea Miller (http://www.andreacecelia.com) has designed and/or art-directed many successful children’s books for both Sterling Publishing and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt including, “Lady Pancake and Sir French Toast” by Josh Funk, “Mira Forecasts the Future” by Kell Andrews, “Accident!” by Andrea Tsurumi and “Winter Dance” by Marion Diane Baur. She co-art directed and designed the #1 national best-selling children’s book, John Oliver’s “A Day in the Life of Marlon Bundo”. Andrea is also a published illustrator, and is co-creating a series of comics with her wife. In addition, she also designs and art directs at HMH’s new graphic novel imprint Etch where she is having a fantastic time. Andrea is excited and honored to rejoin the Children’s Book Academy as part of their esteemed faculty while looking for fresh talent in this course.

Dr. Mira Reisberg (http://www.mirareisberg.com/) is a multi-published award-winning children’s book illustrator and author whose books have sold over 600,000 copies. Besides running the Children’s Book Academy, she is also an acquiring Editor and Art Director at Clear Fork Publishing’s children’s book imprint Spork. Mira is also a former children’s literary agent, and a university professor who taught kid lit writing and illustrating courses as well as teacher ed. She has a PhD in Education and Cultural Studies with a focus on children’s literature and has helped MANY writers and illustrators get published. Her job at Spork allows her to help even more people.

And here are some of the student books Mira has edited and art directed:

Either Mira or Larissa or Andrea will be with you each day to help guide and inspire you on this journey illustrating picture books, board books, chapter books, middle grade or graphic novels or creating portfolio pieces (although the primary focus is on picture books – you will also learn about these other areas)! In addition, there are weekly live and recorded critiquing sessions with the co-teachers and a special industry guest, and weekly mentoring sessions by now published former students.
