Book Giveaway: WE LOVE BABIES by Jill Esbaum

Jill Esbaum has a new non-ficiton picture book, WE LOVE BABIES, published by National Geographic Kids. Jill has agreed to share a copy with one lucky winner. All you have to do to get in the running is leave a comment. Reblog, tweet, or talk about it on Facebook with a link and you will get additional chances to win. Just let me know the other things you do to share the good news, so I can put in the right amount of tickets in my basket for you.

Sharing on Facebook, Twitter, reblogging really helps spread the word for a new book. Thanks for helping Jill, especially at this stressful time when authors and illustrators need to promote their books completely online.

If you have signed up to follow my blog and it is delivered to you everyday, please let me know when you leave a comment and I will give you an extra ticket. Thanks!

A wonderfully playful picture book showcasing adorable baby animals and celebrating their glorious diversity, from “paws and claws and little flippers” to “feet that look like fuzzy slippers!”

This hilarious picture book with rollicking, rhyming text reads like a crowd-pleasing call, pumping up readers’ excitement for the cutest baby animals ever. Illustrated with lively National Geographic photography, We Love Babies! presents furred, feathered, and finned baby animals of all shapes and sizes. Whimsical cartoon cheerleaders add to the fun, popping up throughout the book to lead fans in the irresistible refrain: “We love babies, yes we do, we love babies, how about you?”

This book is especially dear to my heart, because the idea came to me while babysitting my infant granddaughter, back when she was our first and only grandkiddo, nearly five years ago.

She was fussy, so I was pacing the kitchen, whispering nonsensical Grammy things that ended with:  “Awww, we love babies…yes, we do….”

Suddenly that old high school cheer was in my head:

We got spirit, yes, we do!

We got spirit, how ‘bout you?

By substituting babies for spirit, BOOM, I had a concept for a rhyming book detailing all the things we love about baby animals—their teeny parts, the sounds they make, their funny behavior. I’ve always felt like this manuscript sort of fell from the sky. (Just for the record, ideas NEVER come to me that easily.)

Various editors then proceeded to turn it down. Thank goodness one editor gave this reasoning:  “I think this manuscript would be best with photographs, and we just don’t have the resources for that.”

Hit with a big DUH, I had my agent send the manuscript to one of my National Geographic Kids editors.

Aside:  I am continually surprised by what a slow-on-the-uptake dunce I can be. I’d been writing work-for-hire books for NGK for years, yet I hadn’t considered them for this ANIMAL book.

Anyway, my editor loved it and, many months later, WE LOVE BABIES! had cleared all necessary hoops and was given the green light.

Thanks to NGK’s experienced and talented team, the finished book is so magical that I’m still pinching myself. Here are a couple of spreads from the book. Thanks for giving it a look!

Jill Esbaum is the award-winning author of several books for young readers. Some of her titles for National Geographic include Little Kids First Big Book of How, Cherry Blossoms Say Spring, and the Angry Birds Playground titles Dinosaurs, Rain Forest, and Animals.

Jill Esbaum grew up in small-town Iowa. Her summers were spent creating comic strips, getting kittens to follow her home, and playing Barbie beauty pageant with the neighbor girls (which her Barbie never won, since she had the unfortunate habit of tripping and falling during the swimsuit competition or trying to pull off a talent for which she was clearly unprepared). One of her favorite possessions was the mini flashlight that illuminated post-bedtime, undercover reading marathons with Nancy Drew.

She is a frequent school visitor and conference speaker. She teaches writing for children at the Whispering Woods Picture Book Writing Retreat and workshops around the country. She lives with her husband on a farm near Davenport, Iowa. Follow her on Twitter @JEsbaum or her blog,

Jill, Thank you for sharing your book and journey with us. I think we all have a fascination with nature and the animals in this world and who doesn’t love babies? Kids will love learning about the little creatures that inhabit our world. Good luck with the book.
