What does it take to become a professional writer? Laurie talks about the many possible paths to becoming a writer.  She shares the non-traditional steps he took on her own writing journey.  Attendees will come to understand both the work, and more importantly the fun, involved in being a writer.

Laurie Wallmark is the author of three biographies for young readers Grace Hopper: Queen of Computer Code, Ada Byron Lovelace and the Thinking Machine, and Hedy Lamarr’s Double Life. Her next book, Numbers in Motion: Sophie Kowalevski, Queen of Mathematics hits book shevles early in 2020. She is a Hunterdon County resident with an MFA in Writing for Children and Young Adults as well as degrees in biochemistry and information systems.  When she isn’t writing she teaches computer science classes at Raritan Valley Community College and teaches courses on writing for children.

What: Calm Before the Storm Critique and Wellness Event
When: Saturday, 12/7, from noon to 4 p.m.
Where: Monroe and Shotmeyer Rooms, on the accessible lower level of the Wyckoff Free Public Library – 200 Woodland Ave, Wyckoff, NJ 07481

Two tracks: Critique Track includes: editor/agent critique, post-conf submission guidelines, and all activities.
Wellness track includes: all the above except editor/agent critique.

  • Critique track: $120 (nonmembers $240)
  • Wellness track: $25 (nonmembers $50)

Plus: Light refreshments will be provided.

PAL author Laurie Calkhoven, whose guided meditation with writing prompts is a real game-changer
PAL author Lyn Sirota, whose chair yoga is a real life (and limb) saver.

New feature: $10 ten-minute author/illustrator critiques with PAL members: These $10 critiques require pre-registration and your designation of the work you plan to bring: picture book, novel, or rhyme. Here’s how it works: You bring your novel first 5-10 pages or complete picture book. The available PAL member in your time slot spends about 5 minutes reading and 5 minutes on feedback.

Participating PAL critique-ers include award-winning authors:
Yvonne Ventresca and Laura Sassi. (Fact: Many of our current PAL members attribute their success to the feedback of fellow writers.
At this bedrock bargain price, either track can sign up for up to 3.).
