KDP Pen to Publish Contest

Write and publish original and previously unpublished story, poem or novel in English, Hindi and Tamil in any genre and get a chance to win exciting prizes. In order to be eligible, books must be published on KDP between 15 September 2019 and 14 December 2019.


What is KDP?

Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) is a fast, easy and free way for authors to publish their books across the world on Kindle. Authors who use KDP can earn royalties of upto 70%, retain rights such as, can get to market fast, keep control of how their work is published, distribute globally and in multiple languages, and do it all for free.What is KDP Pen to Publish Contest?The KDP Pen to Publish Contest aims at recognising literary excellence among authors who publish original works in any genre in English, Hindi or Tamil languages on Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) between 15th September 2019 and 14th December 2019.

What are the contest entry requirements?

a. Individual author: You should be the sole writer of the book.

b. First publishing: This book should be your original work and must have never been published previously (either in physical or digital format).Translations are not eligible.

c. Date: You need to publish your entry as an eBook via KDP between 15th September 2019 and 14th December 2019.

d. Keyword: You need to include a keyword pentopublish2019 in the book detailed information. You can add 6 more keywords.

e. KDP Select: Your eBook needs to be enrolled in KDP Select during contest duration, i.e., from the time of publishing till winners are declared. You can use any of the KDP Select benefits to promote your book while it is enrolled in KDP Select.

f. Genres: eBooks can be submitted in any genre.

g. Number of entries: There is no limit to the number of eBooks submitted by an author.

What is the difference between long form and short form writing?

For the contest, long form writing is defined as any eBook with more than 10,000 words. Short form writing is defined as any eBook between 2,000 and 10,000 words, both inclusive. Based on the word count, the eBook will be classified by Amazon as long form or short form.

What are the prizes of the contest?

We have several prizes for the contest as listed below:

  1. Long form writing
    1. Cash prizes: For each language separately:
      1. Winner – INR 5,00,000
      2. First runner-up – INR 1,00,000
      3. Second runner-up – INR 50,000
    2. Merchandising package for top 3 entries on
    3. Mentoring session with author judge (s) for top 3 entries
    4. All finalists will also get a chance to compete for the Amazon Prime Video prize to get their work adapted in a movie or series. See *FAQ 17* below.


  1. Short form writing:
    1. Cash prizes: For each language separately:
      1. Winner – INR 50,000
      2. First runner-up – INR 25,000
      3. Second runner-up – INR 10,000

I am an author but less than 18 years of age, can I participate?

The contest is open to individuals who are the older of 18 years of age or the legal age of majority in their jurisdiction of residence at the time of entry.

Can a book be entered in any format – like .doc, .epub, .pdf etc.?

For English language books, we accept several formats like .doc, .docx, .epub, .pdf but for Hindi and Tamil, we accept only .doc and .docx formats.

I have several books but do not have their digital copyrights. Can I still publish those to enter the contest?

No, only the authors with digital copyrights can publish the eBook here.

How will I know that my entry has been accepted into the contest?

You will be able to see your entry under ‘View Entries’ section on the contest page. It may take up to 4 business days from the time of submission for it to be visible on the page. In case it is not visible even after this time has lapsed, please log on to your KDP account and reach out to us through the ‘Contact Us’ tool.

What is the criteria for identifying the winner?

The winner will be selected in two phases:

Phase 1: Each eBook will be rated based on the commercial viability of the eBook (including, without limitation, with regards to the eBook’s sales, borrows and customer feedback). We will look at metrics from the time the book is published until 31st December 2019.

Phase 2: Up to 5 entries will be selected at the end of phase 1 for each language and form combination. These will then be read by our eminent panel of judges and scored to identify the winner.

When will finalists and winners be announced?

The finalists from Phase 1 will be announced around 25th January 2020 on the contest page, as well as informed via email. The winners will be announced around 20th February 2020 on the contest page. Other authors will not be notified.
