BOOK DESCRIPTION:

Picnics! Singing! Fireworks! It’s time to celebrate the best day of all–the Fourth of July!

A responsible little boy who’s eager to do his part wakes up joyful and ready to celebrate his favorite day of all. But there’s a lot of work to do–pies to be baked, deviled eggs to be filled–and the boy has lots of jobs to complete before he can enjoy the fun . . . the world’s best picnic! Face painting! A band concert!

And then, after what seems like the longest wait ever . . . he can kick back and enjoy the fireworks with the rest of the country.

This delicious and spirited book celebrates small town America and is full of nostalgia for times gone by, yet absolutely of the moment.

JERRY’S BIO:

After graduating from Gettysburg College with an English degree, Spinelli worked full time as a magazine editor before his writing career took off.. Every day on his lunch hour, he would close his office door and craft novels on yellow magazine copy paper. He wrote four adult novels in 12 years of lunchtime writing, but none of these were accepted for publication. When he submitted a fifth novel Space Station Seventh Grade, in 1982 about a 13-year-old boy, adult publishers once again rejected his work, but children’s publishers embraced it. Spinelli feels that he accidentally became an author of children’s books.

In 1990, Spinelli won the Newbery Medal for his novel Maniac Magee. More acclaimed works soon followed: Wringer earn a Newbery Honor Medal in 1998, Stargirl (2000) and Milkweed(2003). His recent publications include Jake and Lily (2012), Hokey Pokey (2013), Mama Seeton’s Whistle (2015), The Wardens Daughter (2017). Jerry has published over thirty-three books.

Spinelli’s hilarious books entertain both children and young adults. Readers see his life in his autobiography Knots in My Yo-Yo String, as well as in his fiction. Crash came out of his desire to include the beloved Penn Relays of his home state of Pennsylvania in a book, while Maniac Magee is set in a fictional town based on his own hometown.

Jerry has published over thirty-three books.

Fourth of July

Hot dogs served with chips and pickles,
Shriners riding motorcycles,
Kids all marching, two by two,
Dressed in red and white and blue.

Clowns with flags and bright red noses,
Flashing smiles and throwing roses.
Trotting horses, furry dogs,
Racing turtles, jumping frogs.

Firecrackers bursting bright,
glittering the starry night.
And all the people, everywhere
have come together, here and there,

to celebrate and just to say,
“A Happy Birthday, USA!”
