Agent Hannah Fergesen – KT Literary

Please note I like to see the first three pages of your manuscript along with your query! When citing my manuscriptwishlist, please understand the difference between citing what I represent, and what I’m asking for here. If you have a specific project that fits what I’ve mentioned here, then great! If you’re sending me a YA Contemporary or a YA fantasy in general, please don’t cite this wishlist in your query.

Before I jump in to things I want, here are things I’m NOT the right agent for:

Dragons/Faeries/Elves
Arthurian legend adaptations/retellings
Mermaids
Steampunk
Trilogies
Paranormal romance
Stories about female societies/utopias where the men are dead/subjugated/enslaved/etc
Humor
Anything set during World War 2 (a valid topic but not one I want at this time, unless you’re approaching it from a radically different lens than what is already on the market)
Dystopian

In Non Fiction: Please note, I am now open to nonfiction across all age groups!! In MG I want interesting biographies and STEM-related topics made fun. YA, I want memoir by young or teen writers, especially if your story relates to girls breaking through barriers, activism and politics. In Adult I want unique cookbooks/cookbook hybrids (recipes interspersed with essays, for example), memoirs by women with unique stories of entrepreneurship, books on pop culture and fandom, true crime, contemporary and historical, and anything with a witchy angle (think astrology or tarot).

In Fiction:

I’m looking for YA and MG in all genres, speculative adult fiction.

I’m especially looking for stories by diverse writers across all categories I represent.

Some specific things I’m currently very interested in finding:

For both YA and MG, I’m very interested in finding a good, twisty mystery or suspense.  I loved the Charlotte Holmes books, and if anyone has the novel-version of BRICK, please send it to me.  I am dying for it.

YA rom coms or contemporary YA with great humor/snark despite the serious situations it might be tackling. I’m looking for funny, sweet, cinnamon rolls in love or teens facing adversity in relatable ways! I’ll admit, I’m mostly interested in marginalized/diverse voices, here.

A scary YA vampire story! Take note: I do NOT want your run-of-the-mill paranormal romance. If your book has more in common with the horror of Lost Boys alongside themes like acceptance, fitting in, and dealing with grief, then it’s for me!

I want a Satanic Panic story in any age category, whether speculative, horror, or historical.

I want SF thrillers, gritty space operas, literary/upmarket science fiction (think N.K. Jemisin or Catherynne Valente) and anything that could be found next to Philip K. Dick on the shelf for any age category. I’d love something with politics and an edge like Battlestar Galactica, or a bold re-imagining of another time (like FIREFLY did with the Old West). I love found families, LGBTQ+ characters, and clever world-building.

I would also love to see grounded SF for any age category – think Arrival, Ex Machina, or THEY BOTH DIE AT THE END.

In adult fiction, in addition to the above, I want weird and/or lyrical fantasies and speculative mysteries ala anything by Neil Gaiman and Chuck Wendig, as well as Lev Grossman’s THE MAGICIANS, VICIOUS by Victoria Schwab, DEATHLESS by Catherynne Valente, or KRAKEN by China Mieville. Anything that revamps the genre in a unique way.

YA historical fiction with real-life badass female protagonists (note: I’m not talking about fantasy). Because you’d better believe they existed, all over the world – from famous Chinese pirates to Russian fighter pilots to Western outlaws. In fact, if anyone has these specific stories, send them! Please note: I’ve tried, but I’m simply not the right person for World War 2 stories.

In MG, a NON-speculative STEM story featuring a female protagonist.

Well-crafted MG fantasy with a unique take on magic systems or secondary worlds.

Contemporary MG with themes of activism or current events.

A note: If you see something on here that you respond to, that’s great! Please be very specific about what part of my MSWL you identified with when querying me – I’ve made my wishlist specific so that you can be specific too! This will help me get a better sense of you and your book, and the writer you are!
