BOOK DESCRIPTION:

Chip is sure he has the annual Spud City Festival sack race in the bag–he’s been practicing all year. The Home Fries and Sweet Potatoes are all rooting for him. The French Fries even bring their tots over for pictures. But when Curly shows up with a spring in his step, Chip begins to worry. Can he win the race or will his dream of winning be mashed?

This story is filled with potato puns and potato characters and touches upon sportsmanship and persistence.

Reviews:
“One potato, two potato, three potato, four. Five potato, six potato, seven potato, more—more potato puns than you can count, as a young spud strives to win the sack race at the Spud City Festival. For children who appreciate clever and silly pun.” Kirkus Reviews

BOOK JOURNEY:

I have been writing picture books for many years. Every week, I seem to get a new idea for a picture book, but in the course of a year, I would say only a couple of those ideas materialize into a full-fledged story. When I started working on CHIP AND CURLY, the characters weren’t even potatoes! They were boys who competed against each other. But, as so often happens with my stories, my revisions resulted in something very different from the story I started out writing. The main change came about after attending a potato festival that is held every fall near my hometown in Central PA. After strolling alongside vendors selling potato foods and selling crafts, I felt inspired to change my characters to potatoes and focus the story on a potato type of competition. My creative juices started flowing, and so did the potato puns.

It was so much fun coming up with a list of different kinds of potatoes. I also enjoyed coming up with sayings and phrases that are associated with potatoes and finding a way to fit them into the story without making it sound forced.

Once the story was done, I shared it with an editor I met at the Rutgers One on One Conference. She responded favorably which gave me confidence to keep submitting it. And, sure enough, Sarah Rockett at Sleeping Bear Press responded very favorably and asked to acquire it. I was over the moon. Joshua Heinsz was selected to do the illustrations. His art is whimsical, colorful, and fun. And, just like my other book, Cavekid Birthday, I found the collaborative process of working on this book to be extremely interesting and rewarding. I absolutely love how the designer laid out the text on the pages, and Josh created an adorable Chip and Curly…with socks and headbands! Too cute.
