OPPORTUNITY: Penny Candy Press

Penny Candy Books is an independent children’s book publishing company based in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and Savannah, Georgia. Founded in 2015 by poets Alexis Orgera and Chad Reynolds, Penny Candy released its first title in the fall 2016.  Penny Candy’s imprint, Penelope Editions, released its first title in January 2017.

Penny Candy’s mission is to publish children’s literature that reflects the diverse realities of the world we live in, both at home and abroad. This means seeking out books by and about people and subjects that speak to and from a broad range of human experience.

Because of the overwhelming and response to Penny Candy’s open submissions policy, they have made the decision to limit their submissions period to February – March of each year. They look forward to reading your work at that time. So don’t miss this opportunity.

Note: They will not read submissions that arrive in their email inboxes. The only way to submit is via Submittable.

They are looking for manuscripts for kids’ books that reflect a wide range of authors and illustrators from around the globe. They are not interested in perpetuating a publishing culture that ALL authors, illustrators, and readers do not have access to. While they will not exclude anyone from their catalog, they focus on underrepresented, unheard, or forgotten voices as part of their mission.

In addition, They’re interested in language. They’re poets, and believe language for is an intricate, complex, wonderful, and diverse affair. They are interested in an engaged world view, both in the design of our books and in the illustrations they’ll consider.

To that end, if you have an unpublished manuscript and would like for Penny Candy Books to consider it, click on the below Submittable link for guidelines and to upload.

Talk tomorrow,
