Super Satya is ready to have a super day, including finally conquering the tallest slide in Hoboken. But things take a not-so-super turn when she realizes her superhero cape is stuck at the dry cleaner. Will she be able to face her fears, help her friends, and be the true hero everyone knows she is? Super Satya Saves the Day, introduces Satya, a precocious Indian-American superhero, who is ready to save the day, even if she doesn’t always know it right away!

My daughter Satya and I love bookstores and we’re so lucky to live a few blocks away from our favorite one, Little City Books in Hoboken. Needless to say, we spend a lot of time there poking around for new titles and revisiting some favorites. But after four years of buying children’s books – Satya is almost five – it struck me how few books existed that featured little brown girls having big adventures. And once that thought hit, well, it’s all I could think of. So that’s how  Super Satya Saves the Day came to be.

I wrote it for Satya as a gift, and she loved it and would ask me to read it to her over and over again. (I wrote the story little by little, on the way to work, in the notes section of my iPhone. I really should get a notebook.) It took me about a week to get all the words down – my fire was burning to have something to surprise her with. And I’m so excited, we found a supportive and collaborative home for this story at Bharat Babies. I of having this book in bookstores by the time Satya turned 5 and we just squeaked by – the book came out 10/2 and Satya turns 5 on 11/17. Whew!

Over the past 6 weeks as we’ve taken Super Satya to schools, bookstores and hospitals, and I’m amazed by how many kids – boys and girls – and adults, feel like Super was written for them. Just last week in D.C. I had a doctor at Georgetown Hospital literally squealing over seeing a little Indian superhero on the cover of a book at the same time a patient told me she loved Super because she looked like her. Those are the moments I treasure the most. Knowing that people feel seen, truly seen, because of this story has brought me incredible amounts of joy.

I love this character – the one in the book and the little girl she was inspired by – and I can’t wait to share more of her with the world.
