Opportunity: Writers and Illustrators

The Little Fig’s passion is publishing, and packaging multilingual children’s works that spark kid’s curiosity to explore more.

Based in the Kansas City metro area, The Little Fig focuses on creating multilingual books in varying formats to facilitate children learning in the ways that intrigue them most. We are proud to work with authors and illustrators around the world in producing high-quality picture books and products that feature equal presentations of multiple languages, vibrant illustrations, and often, title-specific music jingles. Our books are both entertaining and educational, teaching concepts, facts, and language skills.

What is the difference between publishing and packaging?

Traditional publishing – the manuscript or artwork, once accepted, is assigned to a team who completes the book in-house. The publishing house usually has the final word on cover design, title, back cover content, marketing and more. The process often takes 6 months to 2 years.

Packaging books / book producers – play an integral part in the publishing industry. Manuscripts and artworks are chosen a few ways. The Little Fig often receives a specific request from a larger publishing house to produce a book from concept to completion.  In addition, we work with authors and illustrators globally to produce print-ready books that are then marketed to large, reputable publishing houses.  Our team provides artists, authors, editors, researchers, graphic designers and more. The process from concept to print-ready is often completed within a year.

About the Founder

S. J. Bushue founded The Little Fig in 2014. Sherry was inspired by teachers, librarians, parents, and caregivers who had shared their concerns regarding the limited availability of books for young children who had English as a second language. Rarely were picture books available in languages like Teluga, yet the student population of Sherry’s local school district was vastly multilingual, with over 67 different languages being spoken.
Seeing this need, The Little Fig was founded to publish and package much needed picture books. Sherry named her company The Little Fig because she sees fig trees and children’s education as quite similar in their potential; each originates from a tiny seed then swiftly grows, spreading into all environments, cultures, and strata. Sherry has a passion for planting seeds of knowledge by creating children’s books that incorporate visual, auditory, and multiple language formats that will inspire and nourish children worldwide.

  1. Do the manuscripts have to be bilingual, or does someone translate them into whatever language you desire? Thank you.

    • I don’t think you need to be bilingual.
