Cozy illustrations make this the perfect introduction to the joy of school.

A diverse class of excited youngsters are about to start school and experience all its wonders! Small moments like discovering one’s own cubby space and big moments like a first nature walk are all brought to life with inviting artwork. This is a great book to help familiarize children with all the activities they can expect at school, from circle time to snack time to goodbye time, all the while sharing the experiences with lots of great new friends.

This picture book’s journey lasted about five years from it’s beginning as an idea to it’s launch date on July 3rd. The publisher and editor, Nancy Paulsen was so very instrumental and incredible with her insight, wisdom and patience as we worked to get just the right wording over the years! The Art Director, Cecilia Yung, was truly an enlightening and inspiring source for me to work with on this book. She is wonderfully wise and I have learned so much from her.

As the illustrator, I first let doodles and sketches lay out the story ideas and characters for quite some time until it was time for me to take on my role as the writer. I needed the character’s help, so I printed them out, cut them out, and propped them up around me at my desk and asked, “Okay, Talk to me. What do y’all want?” After about 8 hours with those little characters, I was elated to finally have a first draft (many more would follow + revisions) of what became the text in HELLO SCHOOL!

Early in my career in children’s books, having joined the SCBWI (Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators) and learning so much –
I had a dream to one day write and illustrate a picture book that featured a hispanic/latina main character in a non-ethnic/stereotypically-based setting – but, rather- just being a little child, along with other little children playing and learning together, becoming friends. HELLO SCHOOL! provided a wonderful way to make this dream a reality.

HELLO SCHOOL! was inspired by thoughts of my own elementary school days, including caring teachers, parents and fellow students and the overall sense of the new, fresh wonderment of just being in school –
the classroom, the playground, from a child’s viewpoint.

Seeing the school itself as a personality –
Melinda, the main character, stops for a moment on the steps leading up to the entrance to quietly say, ‘Hello School!’. She is full of hope and curious anticipation as to what it will be like to be in school for the first time.

A native Californian of Hispanic descent, Priscilla counts herself blessed to have grown up right across the street from her local neighborhood public library in Los Angeles, where her love and devotion for children’s books was born.

Creating characters and images from ink, whether in the real world, or digitally, Priscilla delights most in bringing out the element of expression and emotion.

She is enthuiastically involved in the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI) as National Illustrator Coordinator & Advisor, as well as a member of their Board of Advisors.

Priscilla’s most recent illustrated works include:

Humphrey’s Tiny Tales (books 1 & 2), by Betty G. Birney ~ Penguin/Putnam 2014
