Kane Miller Submission Guidelines for Authors and Illustrators

CALL FOR ILLUSTRATORS: Art Director Andrea Miller at HMH or Dr. Mira Reisberg at Clearfork/Spork could critique your submission on Illustrator Sunday. It starts on July 8th for seven Sundays in a row. This is a limited opportunity to get your work seen by an art director. Illustrators should send in 2 or 3 consecutive illustrations that could be used in a picture book to kathy.temean(at)gmail.com. Please put July/Aug Illustrator Sunday in the subject line, put illustrations in the body of the email and include a picture of yourself and your bio. All .jpgs need to at least be 500 pixels wide.

Kane Miller Book Publishers specializes in award-winning children’s books from around the world. Their goal is to bring the children of the world closer to each other, sharing stories and ideas, while exploring cultural differences and similarities.

The hope is that a child reading a Kane Miller book will “see parallels between his own life and what might be the unfamiliar setting and characters of the story. And that by seeing how a character who is somehow or in some way dissimilar – an “outsider”- finds a way to fit comfortably into a culture or community or situation while maintaining a healthy sense of self and self-dignity, he/she might be empowered to do the same.”

Although Kane Miller continues to look for books from other countries, they are now also seeking works that convey cultures and communities within the US.

AUTHOR AND ILLUSTRATOR GUIDELINES
Due to the volume of submissions and the size of our editorial office, we are regrettably unable to respond to each individual email. With that said, we read every single one and are very grateful for both your time and your interest. Please, no phone calls or follow-up emails.

To inquire about foreign rights or to request reprint permissions, please complete this contact form.

WHAT THEY WANT
Prior to submission, if you are not familiar with Kane Miller, please invest some time on our website to determine if we’re the appropriate publisher for your work.

We are committed to expanding our picture book list and are interested in great stories with engaging characters, especially those with particularly American subjects.

When writing about the experiences of a particular community, we will express a preference for stories written from a firsthand experience.

At this time, we are not considering holiday stories (in any age range) or self-published works.

WHAT TO SEND AND WHERE
Please read the following instructions thoroughly. They are intended to help us track and organize all submissions.

Please include all requested materials within the body of the email. Submissions that include attachments or links will not be considered.

Address your submission to “The Editors.”

Within the body of the email, please include:
short cover letter
complete manuscript, or synopsis and sample chapters
word count
professional bio (3-5 sentences)

While we accept simultaneous submissions, in the interest of time we appreciate knowing that we are not the only publisher you’ve approached.

Send emails to submissions@kanemiller.com.

ART SUBMISSIONS

Our books are aimed at children ages six months to young adults so choose your samples accordingly.

The main characters in our books are children. When submitting illustrations we need to see how you portray children, especially children’s faces and children in action.

Illustrators only may send links to online portfolios to submissions@kanemiller.com. In the subject heading, include “Illustrator Submission.” For all other submission instructions, please see the above contributor guidelines.

Please do not send original artwork.

  2. Thank you, Kathy, for the heads up! However, on “friends.kanemiller.com/submissions.html”, they state that submissions are currently suspended. Do you know if this is true or not? Thanks again, Kathy, for ALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL the great info you send our way!!!

    • Scott,

Well, how do you like that – I always work ten days out and that was not on there when I worked on the post. Sorry about that. Maybe bookmark it and check occasionally. If I notice, I will put up a note letting people know. If you see it before me, I’d love to hear from you.

      Thanks,

      Kathy
