Special First Page Opportunity

Mira and Kelly have agreed to critique 3 Picturebook or Chapter Book first pages each this month. This is in addition to our Agent of the Month First Page Critiques. Feel Free to submit to both. ( See Submission Guidelines at the bottom.)

Last Thursday, I pointed out your opportunity to develop your writing skills with Kelly and Mira during their 5 week e-couse on writing picture books. Here is a chart that might help you decide if this is something for you. Remember, Mira gives out a number of scholarships. If money is tight, you should apply by March 12th. Here’s the chart:

Dr. Mira Reisberg has helped MANY authors and illustrators get published. She has worn just about every hat in the industry including illustrator, author, and literary agent. Mira holds a PhD in Education and Cultural Studies with a focus on children’s literature. She has taught children’s literature survey and making courses at Washington State University, Northern Illinois University, San Francisco City College Extension, and US Berkeley Extension. Mira also works as an editor and art director at Clear Fork Publishing’s children’s imprint Spork and is an award-winning children’s book illustrator and writer. Kelly Delaney is an Associate Editor at Random House/Alfred A. Knopf Books for Young Readers, where she acquires and edits picture books and middle grade and young adult novels. Kelly has a master’s degree in Publishing: Digital and Print Media from NYU. Books she has edited include 10 Things I Can See From Here by Carrie Mac, Lucy and Linh by Alice Pung, The Distance to Home by Jenn Bishop, and Duncan the Story Dragon by Amanda Driscoll. In her time at Random House she has been fortunate enough to work with many of her favorite authors, from R.J. Palacio and Markus Zusak to Anita Lobel and Norton Juster. SUBMISSION GUIDELINES FOR THE MARCH SPECIAL FIRST PAGE CRITIQUES – PB and Chapter book focus:

In the subject line, please write “MARCH SPECIAL FIRST PAGE 2018  CRITIQUE” and paste the text in the email, plus attached it as a Word document to the email. 

Please make sure you include your name, the title of the piece, and whether it’s a picture book, middle grade, or young adult, etc. at the top on both the email and the Word document (Make sure you include your name with the title of your book, when you save the first page).

REMEMBER: ATTACH THE WORD DOCUMENT AND NOT GET ELIMINATED!Your First Page Word document should be formatted using one inch margins and 12 point New Times Roman font – double space – no more than 23 lines – only one page.Send to: kathy(dot)temean(at)gmail(dot)com.

PLEASE FOLLOW THE GUIDELINES: Your submission will be passed over if you do not follow the directions for both the pasted email and the attached Word doc. This is where most people mess up.

DEADLINE: March 18th.
MIRA RESULTS: March 23rd.
KELLY RESULTS: March 30th.

Please only submit one first page a month, but do try again if your first page wasn’t one of the pages randomly picked. Thanks!
