BOOK DESCRIPTION:
Bunny loves to sit outside the library with the kids and listen to summer story time. But when the weather gets cold and everyone moves inside, his daily dose of joy is gone. Desperate, Bunny refuses to miss out on any more reading time and devises a plan to sneak into the library at night . . . through the library’s book drop!
What follows is an adorable caper that brings an inquisitive, fuzzy bunny and his woodland pals up close and personal with the books they have grown to love. A warm celebration of the power of books, Bunny’s Book Club is sure to bring knowing smiles to any child, parent, teacher, bookseller, and librarian who understands the one-of-a-kind magic of reading.
“A sweet salute to reading.”—Kirkus
“Silvestro’s debut picture book is a love letter to the pleasures of reading and libraries, and Mai-Wyss’s colorful illustrations are endearing and comforting . . . A lovely and fun addition for every library.”—School Library Journal
“[Annie Silvestro] makes the pleasures of reading abundantly clear.”—Publishers Weekly
“Mai-Wyss’ soft, muted watercolor scenes sprinkled with charming, expressive cuddly animals is the perfect complement to Silvestro’s enchanting story about the love of books.”—Booklist
BOOK’S JOURNEY:
Every year, my sons’ preschool holds a show that parents produce and perform in for the children. In 2011 I made my parent show debut as a rather odd-looking bunny. As my friends and I joked around about our costumes backstage, something sparked my imagination and eventually became the kernel of an idea for BUNNY’S BOOK CLUB.
For a long time, that’s all it was – the kernel of an idea – an idea that percolated and evolved in my brain over time until finally I made the right connections and was ready to write it down. That was in April of 2013. After that, I revised, revised, and revised some more.
During the NJ SCBWI Craft Day in November of 2013, I was fortunate enough to sit at a dinner table with my now agent, the wonderful Liza Voges of Eden Street. She liked the idea of my story and asked me to send it to her.
Thankfully, Liza saw potential in my writing and took me on as a client. She sent BUNNY’S BOOK CLUB (it had a different title back then) out on submission. We had some interest, but nothing quite right until I had a conversation with my eventual editor, the fantastic Frances Gilbert of Doubleday Books For Young Readers. We found we were on the same page, so to speak, about a new direction and title for what is now BUNNY’S BOOK CLUB. In July of 2014 Frances made an offer on the story, for publication in 2017.
Watching this kernel of an idea become my debut picture book has been an absolute dream come true. One of the best parts has been seeing the characters come alive through Tatjana Mai-Wyss’s exquisite and adorable illustrations. I am so excited to see BUNNY’S BOOK CLUB continue its journey out in to the world!

Not only does the book look super adorable, but it’s interesting to read about yet another NJ SCBWI success story. My big conference this year will be NESCBWI but maybe I can do NJSCBWI next year. 🙂
