BOOK DESCRPTION:
The only thing Bobby wants for his birthday is a pet shark. So you can imagine his disappointment when his parents get him…a puppy. Everyone knows shark lovers can never become dog lovers. Or can they? Full of humor and heart, this book explores the idea that sometimes, getting exactly what you don’t want turns out to be exactly what you need.
BOOK’S JOURNEY:
Land Shark is the story of a boy who loves sharks. He thinks a shark would make a perfect birthday present and is not happy when he receives a puppy instead. The idea came to me after seeing a friend’s puppy chewing her furniture. I started to do some research on dogs and sharks and happily discovered they had lots in common: they both have a great sense of smell, they both eat garbage, they both swim, etc. What was fun about this story is that the boy, Bobby, only comes to love and accept the puppy after the puppy destroys his house and his favorite stuffed shark. Only then does Bobby realize his dog is a lot like a shark and thus the perfect companion.
The illustrations were done by Ben Mantle and his depiction of Bobby with shark fin hair is awesome. So was the destruction shown throughout the book. I myself am personally not a fan of sharks. I live by the beach and was fearless in the water as a child. Then I saw Jaws when I was ten years old and that was it for me. Toes in only. Unless it’s really hot. Really, really hot!
BIO:
Beth Ferry is the author of Stick and Stone, a NYT bestseller. She is also the author of Land Shark, Pirate’s Perfect Pet and the upcoming A Small Blue Whale, swimming into print Fall 2017. She lives with her family by the beach in New Jersey where she reads and writes and often scans the water for sharks. And pirates. And whales.
Thank you Beth for sharing your book and journey with us. Have a great holiday!
Talk tomorrow,
Kathy

Clever! I wonder if I’d pushed for a shark instead of a dog, would I have gotten a dog faster? Eager to read this, and betting lots of little boys – and girls – will be, too.
