Interview Questions for Charlotte Bennardo

How did the idea of doing a collection of stories? Whose idea was it?

This book is the brainchild of Leap Books editor Shannon Delany and Judith Graves to celebrate the 150^th anniversary of Alice in Wonderland. They put the call out for short stories and since I loved the book as a girl, I answered.

Who pulled everyone together?

Editors Shannon Delany and Judith Graves. I saw the call for submissions on Facebook. So check in with social media- I get story ideas, find out interesting stuff, and see requests for stories.

Do you know all the other authors?

I know Christine Norris, C. Lee McKenzie, and Medeia Sharif. The others I haven’t had the pleasure of knowing- yet. I hope to meet and chat with them sometime soon.

Are they excerpts or full short stories?

These are all short stories in various genres. I wrote sci fi, Christine, steampunk; each of us chose a genre. It’s fascinating to see how one simple idea generated so many different stories.

Did you write the story to fit the book or did you already have it in the works?

I wrote this story to fit the iridea- to tell a story based on the Lewis Carroll character of Alice in Wonderland. We were given complete freedom to go anywhere with the story as long as it had 4 elements: a character named Alice, a white rabbit, a journey, and it had to be young adult. Actually, this was my second story- the first one didn’t go over too well. (I think because it wasn’t YA, but more MG.)

What did your agent think of this project?

She supported my desire to do this. While I’m waiting to hear about other books out on submission or being reviewed by her, I need to keep busy writing. She knows I can’t sit still and wait….

Who came up with the wonderful cover?

Isn’t it gorgeous?? I love the title font and the blue. It’s simple, and not a stock photo that you’ll see on other covers. The artist is Gaetano Pezzillo and I believe Shannon, who did the interior artwork, worked with him on it.

Beware the Little White Rabbit came out last year. What have you done to promote the book?

I’ve taken it with me to book signings, blabbed about it on social media, done giveaways for charitable causes, and talk about it. I’m proud to tell everyone that the Lewis Carroll society in England requested a copy for their archives!

Which has sold more: paperback or ebook?

That I wouldn’t know- you’ll have to ask the editors!

Do you see any more collections in your future?

Yes! As long as the premise is intriguing and I have freedom to take the story in the direction I want (notwithstanding edits- you can never avoid those!). I’ve written articles, poems, novels, short stories- anything that I felt I must write. Never ignore your muse- I would have missed this wonderful opportunity if I’d just stuck with YA novels. The only thing I won’t attempt is a graphic novel because it would be poorly drawn stick figures.

Have you gotten any reviews?

We have gotten a number of very nice reviews (but we’d like more so please read and leave a review!).
