Call For Illustration Submissions Bologna


SCBWI illustrators – show your work at the Bologna Book Fair!

A portfolio of SCBWI illustrator members work will be on display at the SCBWI Showcase during the next Bologna Book Fair and available for browsing by publishers, agents and other attendees from across the world. In addition, a digital version of the portfolio will be posted on this website with thumbnails of artwork and contact information.

Call for Submissions

This opportunity is open to SCBWI members (PAL and non-PAL) from all regions worldwide.

After payment and registration (links below) Illustrators are requested to email an image (.JPG) of the one illustration they’d like to exhibit to (click on the email address) from October 1 through to November 15.

The work should:

  • contain one attached image.
  • be titled with the name of the work (not your personal name).
  • have a Maximum size of 1MB
  • be in landscape (minimum 1500 px length) or portrait (minimum 1500 px height) orientation

and, in the body of the email please include the following:

  • I wish to submit this illustration for judging in the 2016 Bologna Illustrators Gallery.
  • the title of your work
  • your name

All artwork submitted by the closing date will then be reviewed for inclusion.

After the closing date, November 15, the jury will select entries to be part of the 2016 Bologna Illustrators Gallery (see the cumulative Illustrators Galleries from previous years). From these entries the ten finalists will be chosen and included in the Bologna Illustrators Gallery as well as displayed on the showcase booth walls at Bologna. The finalists will consist of one winner, two honourable mentions and the remaining entries (or variance thereof). As in previous years there will be a collection of work displayed on the 2016 Illustrators Gallery with the finalists announced early in 2016.

Application for possible inclusion in the Bologna Illustrators Gallery costs $15.

After payment attach and email your work to (click on the email address) by November 15.

The winner will be awarded a certificate at the 2016 New York SCBWI Winter Conference and displayed with the other finalists at the Bologna Book Fair at the SCBWI booth. In addition, from the finalists displayed in Bologna there will be a separate People’s Choice Award chosen by visitors to the booth.

November 15 – last date for submitting illustrations
Mid December – BIG shortlist revealed.
February 12 – Winner announced (at the New York Winter Conference)

The Judges

​Introducing our very experienced, talented and international jury:

Doug Cushman has illustrated over 130 children’s books, thirty he wrote as well. His honors include a Reading Rainbow distinction, New York Times Children’s Best Sellers list, a National Cartoonist’s Society Reuben Award for Book Illustration, a 2007 and 2010 Maryland Blue Crab Award and the 2009 California Young Readers Medal. He enjoys cooking, traveling and painting—even designing wine labels for a Burgundy wine maker—in Brittany, France.​

Naomi Kojima was born in Japan, and has divided her life between Japan and the United States. She spent her childhood in New York, her college years in Memphis, and her first two picture books were published while living in Massachusetts. Since then, her picture books have been published in the United States, Japan, France, and Sweden. Her new picture book, Tetsuko, will be published by Kaisei-sha, Tokyo in 2016.

Laurent Linn is the Art Director for Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers, works on picture books, middle-grade, and teen novels. He is on the SCBWI Board and is Artistic Advisor for the Original Art exhibit at the Society of Illustrators in New York. Formerly, he was Creative Director for the Sesame Street Muppets, winning an Emmy Award. His debut illustrated teen novel, Draw the Line, comes out in 2016.

      I don’t think this opportunity has anything to do with the New York Conference. I am sure that would have been stated if it was.
