  1. Reblogged this on Darlene Beck-Jacobson.

  2. My first book, Vampires Don’t Wear Polka Dots, came out almost 25 years ago. It had Melody, a black third-grader who helped her three friends save the world from her vampire teacher. Since then I’ve always tried to be aware of the diverse population of our country. For instance, the mermaids in Mermaid Tales are diverse. It’s important that kids see themselves in the books they are reading, in order to make that all important connection.
