Here are two adult magazines that could pump up your writing resume and help pay some bills while you are writing your novel or children’s book.
LADIES HOME JOURNAL targets towards 30-55 year-old women who recognize the importance of taking time for themselves. Tone is always optimistic.
1. Finance features (1,800 words)
2. Essays about motherhood (1,200-1,800)
3. “This Mom’s Life,” first-person experience about being a mom (1,200-1,800)
4. “Strong,” the health section
5. “Pet Project,” first-person essays about pets (1,200-1,800)
6. Feature well (1,800-2,400)

MORE Writer’s Guidelines
Thank you for your interest in writing for MORE. While we do not have specific guidelines about subject matter or writing style, we do offer these suggestions:Read Back Issues: We do not publish an editorial calendar, so familiarizing yourself with our editorial content and style will help you decide if your work fits our needs. Back issues can be found in the periodicals section of your library or purchased from our customer service department for $3 each (Call 888-699-4036, then press #1). Do not send payment to our editorial offices.
We Have 4 Months Lead Time: Keep in mind that MORE is targeted at women ages 45-64, so we will be looking for stories that both involve and appeal to women in that age group. If we feel that a submission to MORE is more appropriate for Ladies’ Home Journal, we will consider it for publication in that magazine. Please do not send simultaneous submissions to both magazines.
Submit Queries Rather Than Manuscripts: Keep your query brief – one to two pages – citing your lead and describing how you will research and develop your story. Be specific, and always direct your query to the appropriate editor, as listed on the masthead of the magazine. If you have been published before, send clips, your credits and a resume.
Always Include a Self-Addressed, Stamped Envelope: We will not respond unless a SASE is enclosed (with adequate postage for return of the manuscript, if so desired). We are not responsible for returning unsolicited material, so do not send original copies or photographs. Our editorial offices are located at: 125 Park Avenue New York, NY 10017
We regret that we cannot reply to submissions sent by fax or E-mail.
Payment, Story Length and Deadlines are discussed upon assignment and writers are paid upon acceptance. Average story length is 2,000 words.
Submit Fiction Only Through a Literary Agent
We Do Not Accept Poetry of Any Kind
Please Do Not Call to Query or Follow up on a Submission: We read every query carefully, and do our best to respond as promptly as we can. It may take up to three months to receive a response.
We Cannot Provide Comments on Unaccepted Material: Due to the large volume of manuscripts we receive, we are unable to evaluate each writer’s work personally.
