Free Fall Friday + Industry Update

WHERE IS EVERYONE? I haven’t received even one illustration for January. Would love to show off some of your art work.

CALL FOR ILLUSTRATIONS:  Looking for illustrations that would go well with the month or any illustration that would go with a writing or illustrating post. Same as always: At least 500 pixels wide, sent to kathy (dot) temean (at) gmail (dot) com, and include a blurb about you. Thanks!

BELOW IS THE PICTURE PROMPT for anyone who would like a little inspiration for their first page. It is an illustration done by Laura Jacobsen who was featured on Illustrator Saturday on December 7th 2013.

WRITERS: Sending in a First Page: Please attach your double spaced, 12 point font, 23 line first page to an e-mail and send it to kathy(dot)temean(at)gmail(dot)com. Also cut and paste it into the body of the e-mail.

Put “January 2014 First Page Critique” or “January 2014 First Page Picture Prompt Critique” in the subject line. Make sure you have your name on the submission, a title, and indicate the genre.

DEADLINE: January 23, 2014

RESULTS POSTED: January 31, 2014

Agent Sean McCarthy will be our Guest Critiquer for January. I am doing something a little different with January. I feel bad that over the last months so few of the first pages chosen have been picture books, so this month anyone who submits a picture book will get their names placed in the hat, twice. Make sure you note that in your submission is a picture book. Of course, you don’t have to submit a picture book and whether you do or not, you can increase your chances by posting about Free Fall Friday on your blog, facebook, Linkedin, and or Twitter. You must leave a comment to let me know if you did any of those things, so I can put the right amount of slips for you in the drawing.

At Harper Children’s, Erica Sussman has been promoted to editorial director.

Annette Pollert has joined Sourcebooks Fire as editorial manager. Previously, she was an editor at Simon Pulse.

Brianne Johnson has been promoted to senior agent at Writers House.

Emily Krupin has joined Harlequin as assistant editor for the Love Inspired imprint. Previously she was an assistant editor at Oxford University Press.

Skyhorse’s newest imprint is Yucca Publishing, which will publish authors “with intent, literary strength, and fresh, new visions” in partnership with literary agency and book packager International Transactions. Agency president Peter Riva will serve as Yucca’s executive editor, and the imprint will launch its first list of 20 titles in fall 2014.

WestBow Press, Thomas Nelson’s self-publishing brand that is powered by Author Solutions, will expand to include Zondervan (as both are now part of HarperCollins Christian Publishing.) Director of publisher services and manager of WestBow Press for Harper Pete Nikolai said in the announcement: “By expanding WestBow Press to support Zondervan in addition to Thomas Nelson, we are able to provide the WestBow authors with even more opportunities to be acquired by traditional publishers. We regularly suggest top WestBow Press titles to the acquisition teams at Thomas Nelson and will now do the same for the teams at Zondervan.”

Talk tomorrow,

  1. I think we’ve all been stuck in Laura’s illustration for the last 6 weeks! I’m snowed out, and winter has just begun.

  2. Kathy, I wish I had an illustration for you, but… 😦

And I love Laura’s illustration! If, by some remote chance, I find the time, I’d love to write something. We’ll see!

  3. Thanks Kathy for Free Fall Fridays. I just entered for my chance at a critique and want you to know that I really appreciate the opportunity to enter my work. I love your blog and look forward to the emails I receive from you daily. I’ve posted the contest on LinkedIn, Facebook and my blog Thanks again and good luck to everyone who enters!

  4. Question? Are we to write a first page from the illustration that is posted?

  5. Jackie,

You can send in a first page from something you are working on or use the illustration posted to inspire a first page.

  6. Thanks, Kathy. I saw a post on FB about this. Where may I find the complete details about this. I would like to blog about it, but I do not have all the information. Thanks 😀

  7. Hi Kathy, thanks for the first page critique opportunity. I just submitted a PB first page and posted about it on FB.

  8. Hi, Kathy! Thanks for this opportunity. I submitted a PB and blogged about it at
