If you attended the LA SCBWI Conference last month or are a friend of Kat Yeh, you already know that she won the SUE ALEXANDER AWARD for her young adult book, Girl of Shadow.I apologize for not letting everyone one know it August. It is a big honor for Kat and one that I am so happy to share with you.  I know we will be hearing a lot more success stories from Kat.  Congratulations!

Each year awards are given to the most promising manuscripts submitted for individual critique at the SCBWI Annual Conference in Los Angeles. The winners for 2012 are:

WINNER: Kat Yeh, Girl of Shadow

Karen Bonner, Oakatee
Barbara Herkert, Sewing Stories: The Life of Harriet Powers
Allison Crotzer Kimmel, TOOTS

The winner of the Sue Alexander award receives an expense-paid trip to New York to meet with interested editors.  (Kat is from NY, but it is still great to meet with interested editors.) Kat has two published books:

You’re Lovable to Me

The Magic Brush: A Story of Love, Family, and Chinese Characters

After spending her entire life as an east coast girl, Tamra Tuller at Philomel is taking a huge leap and moving to San Francisco and taking the Children’s Editor Position at Chronicle Books.  She will be in charge of developing their list of middle grade and young adult books.

Tamra starts on October 15th with Chronicle.  This is great news for Tamra and all the children’s writers on the West Coast, but everyone on the East Coast we are sorry to see her leave.  I know I am a mix or happy and sad, but Tamra does have family in New Jersey, so I am sure we will see each other in the future.  Tamra, Best of Luck with the move.  Congratulations!
