Usually, I show you the logos after I have chosen a winner, but this year I thought I would ask you to help me pick a logo for our conference bags. I did not include the names of the illustrators to make sure everyone voted on the one they thought was the best.

OK, again—WOW! WOW! WOW! I’m actually glad I didn’t have time this year to consider making a logo ’cause the competition is great!
EVERY one of these is SO good and the cleverness—SO impressive! I know Kathy loves ALL of them, too, which is probably the reason she needs help deciding! lol
Being familiar with what aspects go into the “narrowing down” of the choices, my own artwork having been “not quite printable” in the past, I’d like to comment on that in case the artists want to revise their work a bit to make them just that—more print-friendly, and then give their work a much greater chance to get on one of the items (there will be more than one!). There can’t be any fine lines or dots, especially used as shading, because the ink that’s used on the items doesn’t “hold” that detail and they blur. In fact, even with my fixing that aspect, when Kathy used mine for a small bag, it was on an item in which the image was too small to not get muddled. It’s the nature of it. So, with that said, please take these comments as they’re meant—as helpful suggestions and not criticism–in the hopes that, if you have the time, you can possibly give yourselves a better chance. Of course, since you are all anonymous, I can’t make these comments privately, so here they are (even though nobody asked! lol)…
#1 – SO clever and VERY print-friendly, so no suggestions! lol
#2 – absolutely adorable, but I think the giraffe needs the black and white inverted, so the face is white and the details, outline and spots are black. Just my opinion, but it’s not necessary. It’s VERY cute, clever and print-friendly as is đŸ™‚
#3 – I ALWAYS love her work and think it would look good on ANYthing, so if I HAVE to pick a first choice, this has it (but it’s SO hard!).
#4 – this idea is great and the artwork is SO beautiful! The only trouble is it’s not that print-friendly, BUT—CAN be made so! Just as I had to remove all my shading, if you (whoever you are) can remove all the fine lines of shading and from the wave curls, maybe make the text just thick, broken lines to represent text (?), remove the checks and just make the flag with a black outline…it would be VERY print-friendly then đŸ™‚ I would SO love to see this on one of our items, and hope these suggestions help if you’re willing to do that, but ask Kathy first, before you do any work!
#5 & 9 – these two are by the same artist, I’m assuming, and they’re both DEfinitely print-friendly. Of the two, I think I’m more into the owl đŸ™‚
#6 – this is SO sweet, and it looks pretty print-friendly to me, though Kathy knows better, for sure! I really love how this year’s artists incorporated both the writing and illustrating.
#7 – this image just REALLY tickles me. I absolutely LOVE this, and although I’m thinking this is my second choice, honestly it’s a REALLY close tie for first, in my eyes! The only thing is, all those fine lines need to be completely removed OR changed and made few and bolder, more similar to the lines on the typewriter knobs. I really love the idea and this PIG!
#8 – this one is definitely print-friendly and the door/book idea is SO clever!

Number 3! The concept of the book as butterfly is clever. But it is the lightness and expressiveness of the silhouette that grabs me. I have an immediate sense of the character of the child. I want this image on my tote!

Wow. Talk about a tough choice. I drool over your conference line-up every year, and, one of these days, I’m just going to get on a plane and go. These logos are lovely, but I’m particularly taken by #4 — the boy in the crow’s nest. Good luck figuring this out!

Wow – what a hard choice – I love giraffes, love books on a tree but I would have to pick #3 as a first choice and #4 second. However #7 had me laughing because doesn’t it feel like a juggling act getting ready for a conference?

I just wanted to put this out there, in case anyone’s concerned:
Please be SURE that my comments most definitely have NO bearing or influence on how winners are picked. My logo artwork hasn’t made the cut, and I know a big reason was because it wasn’t print-friendly. I was just trying to help improve everyone’s chances for their artwork getting picked for something. So, please, don’t worry about the things I suggested—that’s all they were—suggestions.
These logos are all so great, I wouldn’t want to see them nixed simply because they can’t print well.

Geez, I have no clue. I thought they were all great. I started to say I liked #3, and #4, and #5, then went back and thought how clever #1 was, and then decided maybe #6 was best. I’m glad I don’t have to make the decision!
