Writer’s Retreat – Sept. 30th – October 2nd

This year’s Writer’s Retreat is set for the weekend of September 30th to October 2nd at the Hyatt Regency in Princeton, NJ.  This year we will have editor Connie Hsu from Little, Brown and Co. and editor Heather Alexander from Dial. They are both so terrific.  I know everyone who attends will love them as  much as I do.

If you have never attended one of our Writer Retreats, it is known for being a small group where you get 45 minutes with your editor and 45 minutes with your critique group to discuss your manuscript and writing.  It also includes meals with the editors, plus a First Page Session, a writing workshop and a writing contest.
Connie Hsu:

Connie Hsu has edited the whole spectrum, from board books to The A-List: Hollywood Royalty. She’s also the editor of The Devouring, a YA horror trilogy, Grey Griffins: The Clockwork Chronicles series, and Moonshadow, a middle grade ninja adventure.  Her acquisitions include Happyface, a fully illustrated YA novel, The Adventures of Nanny Piggins, a laugh-out-loud middle grade novel about a nanny pig, and Fifty Cents and a Dream, a picture book biography about Booker T. Washington

Heather Alexander:  Heather Alexander has been with Dial for three years.  She has worked on, Beyond Lucky, a middle-grade novel by Sarah Aronson; and Five Flavors of Dumb by Antony John. She is also editor for the Charlie and Lola series by Lauren Child, and co-edited Every Cowgirl Needs a Horseby Rebecca Janni.

Heather is always on the lookout for stories with real-kid emotions, and stories with a really unique hook or a great voice. She loves books with one foot in fantasy, but grounded in reality—she is not the go-to gal for paranormal. She is a sucker for a good underdog story. Her current favorite books are Tales of the Madman Underground by John Barnes, The True Meaning of Smekday by Adam Rex, and Mouse Was Mad by Linda Urban.

Talk tomorrow,

  1. Ack! Once again this retreat is the same weekend as the Collingswood Book Festival! I’m committed to that event.

  2. I’m considering this, is there more information somewhere?
    Thanks! Looks great.

    • Terry Lynn,

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. I just got back today from the SCBWI’s 40th Anniversary Conference in Los Angeles, CA – totally exhausted. I’ll share that info later.

I have not completed the agenda for this year’s Writer’s Retreat, but everyone gets 45 minutes for a one-on-one critique with their editor, 45 minutes with their group to dicuss and critique your manuscript, a First Page Session, a writing contest, (winner picked by editors), breakfasts, dinner, lunches with the editors, a few craft related workshops and a full weekend to interact with both editors,

Please let me know if you have any other questions. We have two spots left, since the group consists of only a few authors and two editors. I will try to post this information again on the bllog.

      Hope you can join us.
