SCBWI Regional Advisor Meeting

On March 17th I flew to Miami to meet with the other SCBWI Regional Advisors from around the country and globe to share ideas on what members want and how we could improve and offer more venues.

I thought you might like to see some of the grueling work that took place.

Friday morning we boarded the Norwegian Sky for our weekend meeting.

All Aboard

Music, Dancing, and Song Welcomed Us

This is the lobby in the ship.

Is Your RA in this picture?

Here are the lovely ladies at the pool.  Do you recognize your RA?

A little book inspiration.  Do you recognize this RA, illustrator and author?  She has published some very cute picture books.

Setting sail Friday evening.

Dinner on Board. Maybe your RA is in this photo.

A little towel art to greet us at the end of the day.

Most ate Conch at the Poop Deck Restaurant.

Some even sang during the meetings.

Pulling out of Port – “Goodbye, Nassau, Atlantis.”

Want to point out that Steve’s daughter is working at National Headquarters. She is sitting down on the left and Lin’s to-be daughter-in-law is working at headquarters and she is third from the right. Both are great!

Saturday night we were treated to a super moon.

After meeting and dinner, Karaoke topped off the night.

One more look at the moon before grabbing a few hours sleep.

More towel art.

The little boat waiting to take us to our private island. I call it a dinghy.

On the dinghy

The water was choppy on the way to the island, but it was fun. Of course, I had the little patch behind my ear. Some people’s stomach might not have thought it as much fun.

Island around the bend.

The white sand and blue water was gorgeous.

Almost there.

Back to the ship.

What can I say, writers are a creative bunch.

And it comes to an end.

The day before I left I developed an abscessed tooth, so it was touch and go as to whether I was going to be able to attend, but I made it with the help of some good pain medicine.  I guess the stars were watching over me, because the tooth waited to get me problems until Monday on the way home and by Tuesday, my face was so blown up that I didn’t have an eye that you could see.  I did have a purple circle and a face that looked like it was made out of Silly Putty and pulled out of shape.  Thank goodness it didn’t happen on the ship.  If I had been brave enough to leave my room looking like that, all the kids would have been screaming to go home.

Later, I will be sharing some of the new things the SCBWI will be doing in the future.  Hope you don’t feel like I wasted you time with this post.

Talk tomorrow,

Kathy

  1. Kathy, that was SO enjoyable to see! I tell you, since I’ve never been to an island, I always thought the color of the water was fake lol…but now I know better! How gorgeous! It looks like you all had a great time, and it made me really happy to know you got to enjoy some time away 🙂 You deserve that and much more! I loved seeing the pics of Steve and Lin, too! Thanks for sharing these with us! But there was ONE thing missing, my dear: pics of you! (…although, I suspect the mystery feet may have been attached to YOUR body lol)

    • Donna,

No, the color of the water is not fake. I always saw the beautiful turquise color, but I was surprised at the shade of dark blue in the deep water. I never saw that shade of blue. It was gorgeous. This was my first cruise – wasn’t sure I was going to like it, but it was fun. Obviously I would have had a better time if I wasn’t drugged up.

And no, the mystery feet are not mind. I really don’t know who they belong to, the picture was sent around on the RA listserv.

  3. Oh, Kathy you poor thing. It looks excruciating. I bet you couldn’t wait to get back to the dreary, bleak weather in NJ.

    Seriously, how salubrious!

(My family and I were treated to a Norwegian Cruise a few years back ((looks like the same boat and stops… not sure)) and it was pure heaven.)

Welcome back, and thanks for sharing! Barb 🙂

    • Barbara,

I think this is a popular cruise. One of my girlfriends had taken this one, too.

      See you soon,

  4. Kathy, glad you all had a good time. It looks like fun. Thanks for the wonderful photos; they really give a sense of what you all were looking at. If my red squirrel story sells, I hope to go to the beach myself.
    Good reporting job!

    • Helaine,

I love the beach, even though I can’t sit out in the sun. But the water off the Jersey Shore is not the gorgeous colors you see here. The lifeguard said he thought it was because thery don’t have waves that churn up the bottom.

Sorry to hear about your tooth.

    • Mandy,

Life is always throwing something in the way. Who would expect to get sn abscess and have to have root canal the day before you leave? Just imagine how bad it would have been to have that happen during the cruise. So I was lucky.

      • I’m just glad for you that the timing worked out better than worse ’cause, as you said, it could’ve been much worse. How wonderful it would be if your mouth (and your dentists) would leave you alone for a great while!

I had taken my computer with me hoping to get some work done, but when I turned it on, Word decided to not open and everything I needed to do was in Word. I think someone was trying to tell me something.

      See you soon,

  7. Kathy,
I loved all of your pictures and I’m SO GLAD you were able to make the trip. You totally deserve this — all of your hard work and dedication to this chapter is greatly appreciated!! Hope your face is back to normal now and that your pain is gone. Looking forward to hearing more about the trip! 🙂

    • Connie,

My face is back to normal. It’s still sore, but I go back to the dentist tomorrow and then I have an appointment on Tuesday, too. I will be so glad when I can get a break from the dentist. I’ve gotten quite a few books read over the last year waiting in the office. So there is an upside. Just finished reading Laurie Halse Anderson’s TWISTED. All I can say is read it. It’s great!

      See you soon,

  9. AHa! Now I know where Teresa Fanin went when she said she was going out of the country on business…and why folks decide to become RA’s! Thanks for sharing. Fun. Hope your tooth is better. Nothing is worse than a toothache when you’re away from home.

    • Carol,

That’s the first time in 40 years they have done anything like that. Not too many perks come with taking on the RA position. It was a nice bonus.

    • Mimi,

I am going for surgery on Monday. They have to do a root canal and then cut open the gums and dig out the infection in my cheek. I’m so sorry I wasn’t there to cheer you up, but I have some good thoughts for you about your book. I’ll try to write.

      • Oh, man, Kathy—you and your mouth 😦 Your poor gums and your poor cheek! Unfortunately, I think this is fairly common getting infections from dental work 😦 *sigh* I hope you aren’t in lingering pain once it’s done. Good luck and I hope this is the last of it!
