Children’s Writing Conference

Laurie and I are super excited to let you know that the 2011 New Jersey SCBWI Conference will be held on June 3rd – June 5th at the Wynham Princeton Forrestal Hotel and Conference Center in Princeton, NJ.  I thought we leaped tall buildings last year, but this year we have added another dayand a lot more space, which will provide more time to network, attend more workshops and provide for less stress during the conference.

The Wyndham is a conference center, so the facilities are perfect.  Drinks and snacks are provided throughout the day.  Breakfast, lunch and dinner on Saturday and breakfast and lunch on Sunday come are included in the price of registration.  Friday night we will have a special Mix and Mingle with food, so you can start rubbing elbows with the editors and agents.  Remember you need to stay over-night both days to be able to attend the Mix and Mingle with the editors and agents for $35.  The hotel is giving us a special rate of $90 a night.

Published authors and illustrators, can sign up for the Saturday Bookfair when they register for the conference.  Space is limited, so you want to make sure you sign up early if you want to participate and sign your books.  This year we are paying a local bookstore to take care of ordering and selling your books.  Once you register, we will let you know how to contact them.

I am hoping to have registration up in the beginning of January, so you can start signing up.  Remember the “Early Bird” gets the worm and this is no different.  You can save money by registering early and you will secure the workshops you want attend, get into the First Page Sessions, lock in a one-on-one critique, two or three,  and guarantee getting to pitch to an agent.   And since some of the rooms in the hotel have king-size beds, booking early will assure that you get the type of room you need.

We will start on Friday afternoon with  optional Intensive Workshops.  I will be giving you more detailed information next week on those, but you will be able to choose from the following:  Revisions, Voice and Plot, Characterization, Writing Fictional and Non-fiction Biography, Editorial and Business Side(Contracts, etc.) of Getting Published, possible Humor Writing, Picture Book, and Developing and Making a Book Trailer.  Also Illustrator’s Day will start on Friday afternoon.
