This Week’s Happenings and Tip

Well, this is another busy week.  We are having two more dinners with editors and agents in New York City.  For those in the area who are looking for a good restaurant in the city, I can tell you we really enjoyed the two restaurants where we ate last week.  They were Broadway Joe’s Steakhouse on West 46th St. and Trattoria Depo Teatra on West 44th St.  Both provided us a quite area where we could talk and both served excelent food for a good price.  I hope this week’s restaurants are as good.

My goal for this week is to put the finishing touches on Anita Nolan’s site and complete author Carol Murray’s website  and finish the artwork for Betsy Devany’s site, so I can get things started for her.  Also I am working on a special site, which when I am done I will announce to everyone.  I’m not supposed to let the cat out of the bag before it is complete.

Lots of good stuff percolating beneath the surface at the NJSCBWI.  I hope I will be able to announce what we ‘ve been working on, soon.  Right now, you might want to think about coming to one of the mentoring workshops we have listed on our website  I just confirmed that Erica Sussman from HarperCollins will be joining us on October 25th – others will be announced this week.  Remember we are having a first page session in Princeton on September 9th.

Now that the weather is nice and we are all out and about, think about what you have planned for the week.  Are you going to the beach?  Maybe you belong to a pool or going to a BBQ with friends and family.  Use these times to come up with ideas for that next book.  Observe the kids and keep your ears open.  If you can get away with taking along a notebook, then do it.  Focus in on the age group of the characters in your stories.  Make note of how they say things.  Do they use slang words?  How do they interact with other kids and their parents?  What are they wearing?  How do they comb their hair?  I know a lot of you already keep a journal, but sometimes we forget to take it with us when we go out with the family, so sneak a small one in your pocket.

  1. OOH! OOH! I wanna know what the secret surprise website is! Kathy, you CAN’T give me teasers–I won’t be able to think about anything else! Tell me! Tell me! A hint? Gimme a hint?! ARRRGH!

Well, I hope you’re happy that I’ll get positively no work done today now, missy!

  2. I think you are going to be away, when we do this. Boohoo!

    • Hi, I am curious about the news too. Joe’s was fun the other night, thanks Kathy. I mentioned on the NJSCBWI that I enjoyed conversing with passionate writers and editors. There was one editor, I can’t remember how to spell her name, Shawnee maybe, hope that’s right. She was curious about one of my manuscripts, but I didn’t realize it at the moment. My answers were too short-I think. I was enjoying the conversations so much that I forgot that I should have been plugging my works some more. Is her info. with the others from the conference? If not, can I get it somehow? I would like to see if she might be interested in reading my story.
