10 Blog Comment Tips

So you are blogging and no one is commenting.  What do you do?  Well, I’m still working on this subject, but here are ten things you can use starting right now.

1. Make it easy for people to comment.  I have visited blogs where I couldn’t find a way to leave a comment.  Then I have visited blogs where after filling out all the forms, it still wouldn’t accept my comment.

2. Link to other people in your posts.  That will encourage them to visit you.

3. Ask open questions.  Ask for help.

4. Use conversational language.  Be friendly.

5. Now and then, share something about yourself.

6. Reply to every comment

7. If someone visits your blog, visit their blog and leave a comment.

8. Send a welcome e-mail to first-time visitors who comment.

9. Once in a while, write about blog comments.  It encourages people to join in.

10. Don’t expect people to come to you: visit other blogs.

Have you been successful in getting people to comment on your blog?  I would love to hear about the things you found worked.  I will share your suggestions with a link back to your blog.

Thanks,

Kathy

  1. I haven’t had too much success yet, though I am beginning to work on it. Most people who have commented on my blog, are people who I have visited previously, or people who have followed me on twitter or the like.

I’m also reaching out to other writers and have almost organised my first guest blogger and I’m hoping to build some interest there.

Thanks for the tips and I wish you well in building your following.

    • Thanks for leaving me a comment. I visited you blog and tried to leave you a comment three times. Maybe it went through, but it went to an error and said it couldn’t be sent. If you didn’t get it, maybe it is happening to others. Anyway, I liked your list of moments. I think they could be used for writing prompts.

I think you really have to visit other peoples blogs to build the traffic on your blog and leaving a comment on their blog, might get them to visit your blog. But i think as a writer you need to have a plan or you will either forget to do it or you will spend too much time and not write.

Do you writer fantasy for children? Or are you writing for adults?

  2. Thanks for the great tips, Kathy. I’m getting ready to build my blog now and I do worry that no one will leave comments. 🙂 It also takes times to build a readership, so we have to hang in there.

    • I think people who have blogs are more apt to leave a comment, since they realize how it feels to keep writing and never hear from anyone. I know I was guilty of this, before I started blogging. Good luck with you blog. Let me know when you get your blog up.

  3. Hi, Kathy – This is a great subject, as I am another who finds lots of people are visiting my blog, but next to no one comments. So I don’t know what exactly it is that people are hoping to find when they come. I know exactly what they’re looking at and that these posts have some value, but who the visits are from? No clue! I’ve been pretty much doing what you’ve suggested, too. I recently invited visitors who look at my French Bulldog sketches to share – so far, no luck. Are we all very shy? Or just prefer to remain anonymous?
Anyway – love your blog – keep all the great info coming. Jeanne

    • Jeanne,

I haven’t visited your site this past week, since I have been up to my neck in conference stuff. I am hoping I can get last weeks work done this week. We have 220 people coming and 212 manuscript critiques and 28 portfolio critiques. I don’t know of any other conference that give 240 critiques in under two days. I think this is going to be our best conference, yet.

  4. Suddenly, the earth heaves, and a new mountain is born. Perched at its apex is Ame. With a megaphone. (Yes, I’m aware that item is generally extraneous, thank you. I’m going for an image here.) And Ame raises the megaphone to her lips and booms, “Hey, all you Kathy’s blog freeloaders! Yeah, you! Always sucking up Kathy’s good info into your eyeballs and never leaving a comment! Put those pointer fingers to good use, will ya?! And, while you’re at it, recycle. And… feed a stranger’s meter. Thank you–that’s all for now.”

      • Hey, Kathy! Hey, Jeanne. Aw, you’re both awesome. But no, I don’t really have a blog–at least that I know of. (If I let my main personality have one, then they’d ALL want one…)

  10. hi Kathy ~ thanks for visiting my blog. Yes, I’m writing YA fantasy. As for the errors in posting, I’ve experienced them myself and if,when you click to post and get an error, click post again. It seems to go through the second time. I’ll have to contact google/blogspot and see if I can report it.
