Writing Contests

The Knight Agency

For those of you who have written a completed unpublished novel,
here’s your chance  to have one of the agents the Knight Agency review
your work.  You have until April 20th to submit a 3 sentence pitch (max of
150 words).
It can be e-mailed to  You will need to
write BOOK IN A NUTSHELL in the subject line or it will not be deemed eligiable. 
You can only send in one submission per project until April 20. Twenty of the best submissions will be requested by various TKA agents and receive feedback.  It is possible it could lead to representation.

Hurry, as the deadline is April 20th, 2009. Winners (those in the top 20)
will be notified by May 1, 2009.


Your challenge: Write a creative, compelling, well-crafted story between 1,000 and 5,000 words long that clearly uses the premise.
One or more characters encounter something, someone, or some place for the first time, either by chance or design.

How your character(s) feel about this encounter is up to you. Just remember to make the encounter a central element of the story, not something that happens in the first paragraph and is never mentioned again.
1st – $140
2nd – $100
3rd – $70
Honorable Mention – $25
All payments in US dollars.
Between zero and three honorable mentions will be published.

If you have written or writing a mystery novel set in the southwestern US that can be ready by the deadline of June 1, 2009, then you may want to enter the 2009 HILLERMAN MYSTERY COMPETITION.  If a winner is selected, St. Martin’s Press will offer to enter into its standard form author’s agreement with the winner for publication of their manuscript. After execution of the standard form authors agreement by both parties, the winner will receive an advance against future royalties of $10,000.

Lorian Hemingway Short Story Competition

Entries are now being accepted for the 2009 Lorian Hemingway Short Story Competition, created to recognize and encourage the efforts of writers who have not yet achieved major-market success. Writers will compete for a $1,000 first prize, $500 second prize, and $500 third prize in this internationally acclaimed competition. Several honorable mentions are also awarded each year.
Stories in all genres of fiction are welcome. Maximum length is 3,000 words, and writers retain all rights to their work. The final deadline is May 15, 2009; winners will be announced at the end of July.
